Kelda Organic Energy (Edinburgh)
Kelda Organic Energy (Edinburgh) is the operating company of Alauna Renewable Energy (ARE). ARE is a joint venture set up between Kelda Water Services and Scottish Water Horizons which has been set up to manage the prestigious food waste treatment contract on behalf of Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils. ARE is working with the City of Edinburgh and Midlothian Councils to design, build, finance and operate a state of the art anaerobic digestion (AD) facility as part of the Zero Waste: Edinburgh and Midlothian Project.
Kelda Organic Energy (Edinburgh) have built and now operate the 30,000 tonnes per annum Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility in Millerhill, Edinburgh. This facility is capable of recycling all of the discarded food that is collected by the two Partner Councils plus some additional wastes from local businesses and industries.
The anaerobic digestion facility will produce methane gas which will be captured and used to generate renewable electricity. The electricity produced at this facility, enough to power 3300 homes, will be utilised by Scottish Water at their local water treatment works. In addition to electricity, the facility will produce a digestate material, which will be recycled back to land as a soil conditioner and fertiliser, which is high in valuable nutrients.
